However, we have to give a massive shout-out to Kow Otani’s absolutely perfect soundtrack, which has been beautifully implemented by the game’s developers. We were getting serious vertigo in some of these fights. Everything from the realistic hair to the blur of the distant ground as you clamber onto a titan’s head really adds to the experience. Scaling these beasts is as epic as ever, especially with those 4K visuals. Meanwhile, coming face-to-face (or rather, face-to-toe) with an enormous Colossus remains a seriously humbling experience. The camera sweeps around the majestic scenery and occasionally catches the light, to stunningly realistic effect. As we rode towards each battle, we could have sworn we were watching some breathtaking cinematic scene rather than playing a game. Those updated graphics are certainly spectacular on the PS4.

You can switch between this and the original layout in the game’s settings.īesides that, Shadow of the Colossus on the PS4 is basically the same game we (mostly) all know and love. You also have the option of an updated control scheme, to fit more in line with modern titles. This doubles the frame rate to 60 frames-per-second. Alternatively, if you’d rather enjoy a supremely smooth gaming experience, the Performance mode will satisfy.

Owners of the Pro model will enjoy crisp Ultra HD 4K visuals in the new Cinematic mode, running at 30 frames-per-second. To really get the most out of this updated title, you’ll need to own a PS4 Pro. Question is, what’s changed and is this latest version the definitive Shadow of the Colossus experience? What’s new in Shadow of the Colossus on PS4?

This legendary title is now in its third incarnation in this PS4 re-release, following its PS2 debut and PS3 update. Shadow of the Colossus is one of the blessed few. However, not many games have proven themselves worthy of a second remake.
Quite a lot of recent console releases are actually remastered versions of older titles, with a healthy bit of spit and polish to bring them up to date. What is different, and will it please fans and newcomers alike?
I wouldn't worry too much about missing out on the "best" experience and just enjoy the ride. Our Shadow of the Colossus PS4 review reveals if this is the definitive version of the original PS2 game. I think most people love the remake despite any nitpicks.
There's small things that I think the original does better that bother me, but there's lots that the remake brings to the table. I'm biased towards the original version, and us old fans will always nitpick the remake, but it's essentially the same game. If you don't have access to the PS3 remaster, I wouldn't worry about seeking it out and just go with the remake. The PS4 remake reworks everything, so this "issue" is fixed.

Some people may like the challenge, but lots just find it frustrating, especially if you're going for full completion. The only real detriment to the PS3 version is that the game is slightly harder because it seems to be easier to lose your grip and get knocked off balance when the colossi shake (I remember.some people saying it's a bug actually resulting from the improved frame rate, but I don't know how accurate it is). The PS3 remaster is essentially the PS2 release with a pretty stable 30 FPS and minor graphical updates (resolution, textures, etc.). I'd pass on the original PS2 release simply because its frame rate is pretty unstable during colossi battles. Which of those improves your personal game experience more? If you instead have the PS3 remaster, I'd say it's a toss-up and it's just up to what you value, having that "original" experience or having all the new bells and whistles. If it's just between the actual PS2 version and the PS4 remake, go with the remake.
